Sioux Empire Kennel Club Halloween Costume Contest, Sioux Falls, SD October 30, 2010

I had so much fun tonight! It was a blast! I was definitely a crowd pleaser! People think that I have been working on my cords for just the conformation show ring, well guess what, the secret is out! I have been working on my cords for three years now just so I can have a natural costume for the contest. Yes, it’s all been for the annual costume contest, the real competition! A Havanese has to be shown in a natural coat so I’m a natural mop! Oh yes, I will be forever be known as the ‘Mop Dog’!

There were well over 100 dogs entered in the contest. We had the sleep number sheep, a homeless puppy, a pumpkin patch, and even a fairy rock star. There was Dorothy with the red slippers, a frog prince, and too many to mention them all. They looked so good. The competition was fierce! Then there was me, Little Bee with ‘Busy as a Bee Maid Service’. I was the head mop and Mom was the maid. We even had a bucket of soap suds.

I had my fan club of course and believe you me, it grew exponentially! Hugs and Kisses to all my fans, you guys are the best!!!!

Mom and I were waiting for the contest to begin and my fans were admiring me. When Mom told them that my name was Bee, one guy said, ‘oh gets even better’. My fans followed me to my ring for the class judging. They cheered for me. I did some figure eights to look as if I was mopping, you know special effects. We played the part very well. Well enough to be the winner of my class along with some really big dogs that were police dogs.

My fans followed me to the Best in Show ring. The judge couldn’t make up her mind so she had us go around the ring one at a time. The crowd helped her judge by cheering. I had the biggest cheer of all. They chanted ‘Mop Dog’, ‘Mop Dog’, ‘Mop Dog’.  The Judge pulled four dogs out for the final four. I was one of them! The crowed kept cheering ‘Mop Dog’, ‘Mop Dog’ but the judge didn’t agree. She cut me and the pumpkin. It was down to Scuba Doo and the tortoise. The judge still couldn’t make up her mind so she asked the crowd to help again. They said ‘put the Mop Dog back in!’ She didn’t listen to them and finally picked the tortoise.

The next day I was waiting to show in conformation and it was really hard to do my pre game ritual of sitting on my table like the Queen Bee that I am. People kept coming by, some complemented me and Mom on our costume and others would tell us ‘clean up needed in Ring 3’. I told Mom ‘don’t even think about it! I have to stay a clean Mop for my conformation show.’

I’ll be back next year to clean house with four years of growth on my cords so get ready fans, I will need your help! The Mop Dog will rise again!

Trail of Tears Commemorative Park

Hopkinsville, Kentucky

November 28, 2010

The Trail of Tears Commemorative Park is one of the few documented sites of actual trail and campsites used during the forced removal of the Cherokee people to "Indian Territory." It was used as an encampment in 1838 and 1839. This park is the burial site for two Cherokee Chiefs who died during the removal, Fly Smith and White Path.

This long, cruel relocation has become known as the "Trail Of Tears" and by American Indians as "The Trail Where They Cried." Linda is a direct descendent of many Cherokee that were part of the removal. Hapi is named “Trail of Tears” in honor of the ancestral pets that were left behind in the homeland during the removal. Hapi has an upside down tear drop spot on her behind. We call her “Hapi” because she has so many happy trails ahead of her picking up the tear drops as she goes.

Kisses for tear drops

Trail Goes On

Trail Goes On

Trail Goes On

Trail Goes On

THE TRAIL GOES ON

THE TRAIL GOES ON

BUT THEY STAND AT THE END OF THEIR JOURNEY SHIVERING IN THE COLD

SHAKING WITH SICKNESS THAT NO LEADER SHOULD ENDURE

THE TRAIL GOES ON

BUT THEY STAND UPON THIS GROUND

ONE WITH HEAD BOWED IN SILENT ACCEPTANCE LEANING ON HIS STICK

THE OTHER WITH HANDS OUTSTRECTHED

ASKING THE GREAT SPIRIT TO HELP HIM KNOW THE REASON

FOR THE GRIEVING AND THE SUFFERING OF HIS PEOPLE

THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN CRY IN THEIR CAMP BY THE RIVER

STUNG BY THE FROST ACHING FROM THE LACK OF FOOD

THEY LOOK TO THEIR CHIEF FOR ANSWERS

AND IN THEIR EYES SEE ONLY EXPRESSIONLESS DESPAIR

THE TRAIL GOES ON

BUT TWO CHIEFS LIE HERE IN THE STILLNESS

UNABLE NOW TO HELP THEIR PEOPLE

THROW OFF THE OPPRESSION OF THE WHITE MAN AND HIS MANIFEST DESTINY

THEIR PAIN LIVES ON IN THESE FIGURES

SILENT NOW BENEATH THE SUN AND STARS

AND THE TRAIL GOES ON
